from The 'sled' end is plain enough — an old Germanic word for something you drag or slide over snow, cousin to 'sledge' and 'sleigh.' Early sleds were built by joining two shorter sleds together, and riders would 'bob' — shift their weight back and forth — to coax more speed out of them.
