means The quality of being refined, worldly, and culturally polished — or the state of being intricate and complex.
from From the Greek 'sophistēs,' a wise one or teacher, rooted in 'sophia,' wisdom — the same root behind 'philosophy,' the love of it. But the path turned shady: the Sophists were paid teachers of rhetoric whom Plato accused of clever, hollow argument, so 'sophist' soured into someone who deceives with slick reasoning. From there came Latin 'sophisticare,' to tamper with or adulterate — which is why early English 'sophisticated' meant corrupted or impure, as in wine cut with cheaper stuff. Only later did the tarnish turn glamorous, the word drifting from 'falsified' to 'worldly-wise' to today's compliment of refinement.
